Background

In 1976, the German founder of the company lived during her studies (anthropology) in a Balinese village with no electricity and “experienced” the world of the Balinese. Because the streets of the island had not yet been fully developed, there was only car with which you go to remote areas, the VW Jeep. There were only 5 Jeeps on the entire island. From 1979 she worked for the Academic Study Tours of the University Heidelberg and was able to use these cars to show their guests the individual Bali. Through this experience, the idea of organizing VW Kuebelwagen tours was born in 1997.

Philosophy:

As from 1994, tourism increased considerably. Bali’s streets where made wider, new streets where added. All the interesting places, including temples, were made to “Objects”, where traders settled. Tourists no longer had the opportunity to see the “Real” Bali, and were taken by local agencies in the big coaches on the main roads from place to place.
By showing her allegiance to the island and wanting the guests to be able to see the true face of Bali, she founded a travel agency, with a Balinese partner exclusively for these specialized tours. After a long preparation time and route inspections, the first client, was a Swiss travel agency, Imholz. The company’s philosophy is based not only on the individuality of the tours but also the fact that the guests can escape the mass tourism. Two people are normally sitting in one jeep, on request, families, more), and even when several cars go together, each guest can stop, thanks to our well trained drivers whenever he wants, to photograph or to watch anything they are interested in. Our local guides specifically focus to explain, not only religion and botany, but also the daily life of the Balinese in remote villages.

CARS:
The VW Kuebelwagen was designed before World War II by Ferdinand Porsche as a toy buggy for his son. As these cars were very reliable in any terrain, they were used as military vehicles in the 2nd World War II. The Volkswagen company produced different versions until 1976. The cars that we use in Bali, have been assembled by VW in Jakarta To this day, these cars – at least in Bali – are the only convertible that can go through terrain that otherwise is only accessible by vehicles with four-wheel drive.
